I noticed his departure as well (through some missing comments). He said he was going to change this ways and wanted to stick to his (then-)current account name. I only knew him superficially, so I cannot tell how dedicated he was to bettering himself, but the way he conducted himself in his apology didn't strike me as 'transparently disearnest'.
If he had been a bit of a rascal before, it's possible some missteps from his past caught up to him and lead to his deletion.
